HYUNJU HWANG
CONCERT ORGANIST
Dr. Hyunju Hwang is an award-winning, classically trained organist who has performed throughout the United States and Europe at prestigious venues such as Westminster Abbey, Coventry Cathedral, Oxford University Church, Grace Cathedral, and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
Dr. Hwang was born in Seoul, South Korea, and earned her Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from Yonsei University. She then moved to Princeton, New Jersey, for her Master of Music in Organ Performance and Sacred Music at Westminster Choir College. Next, she went to Cleveland, Ohio, to study with organist Todd Wilson at the Cleveland Institute of Music, earning an Artist Diploma in Organ. Her final academic stop was Los Angeles, California, where she pursued a Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music with full scholarship, studying under Dr. Ladd Thomas and Cherry Rhodes.
Dr. Hwang has received numerous awards and honors, including first prize at the John Finley Williams Organ Competition in the United States. She also achieved semifinalist status at the St. Maurice International Organ Competition in Switzerland and the St. Albans International Organ Competition in England. During her time at the Cleveland Institute of Music, she was recognized with the Henry Fusner Prize for outstanding achievement. While at the USC Thornton School of Music, she was the recipient of the Irene E. Robertson Music Scholarship, as well as a departmental award. Her keyboard versatility also earned her the Greenberg Harpsichord Award from the Early Music Society in San Francisco, California.
Dr. Hyunju Hwang has served as an organist at The Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates since 2019. She also currently holds positions as an organ faculty member and collaborative keyboardist working with three choir ensembles at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Before joining LMU, she was a collaborative pianist and vocal coach at Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills, California and University of Redlands in Redlands, CA. She has previously taught organ at Shepherd University in Los Angeles, California, and Bethesda University in Anaheim, California. Since 2021, she has been serving as a Dean of the Long Beach Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and she also served as the Director of the AGO Pipe Organ Encounters of Long Beach in 2022.
