Ann Marie Rigler

Organist & Presenter

Hailed by American Record Guide as “a jewel of an organist,” Ann Marie Rigler maintains an active schedule as a solo recitalist, presenter, choral accompanist, chamber musician and adjudicator whose performances “exude the quiet confidence of a master” (Lincoln Journal-Star). Her recital and lecture presentation credits at venues throughout the United States include performances at conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, the College Music Society, and the Southwest region of the American Choral Directors Association. She is featured on several recordings as organ soloist, choral accompanist, and chamber musician, including “Historic Organs of Pennsylvania,” “The Green Album” and, most recently, “The Trumpet Sounds” with the William Jewell College Concert Choir. Since 2012 she has made three concert tours of the United Kingdom, performing as both organ soloist and choral accompanist. She also concertizes with organist Melody Steed, earning accolades at the 2017 Musforum conference for their “outstanding organ duo” described as “one mind in two bodies.” Other recent performances include the premiere of “The Wedding of Solomon” for the 2018 AGO national convention and a program titled “Prelude to the Armistice,” featuring organ solo and chamber music interspersed with readings from her paternal grandfather’s recollections of his service in the Great War. As a church musician, Ann Marie currently serves as organist for Country Club United Methodist Church in Kansas City, MO. 

As Professor of Music and College Organist at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, Dr. Rigler plays for College ceremonies and teaches courses in music history, keyboard skills, and Christian worship practices. Her work as College Organist was recently recognized with the Excellent Campus Citizen award conferred by the student body. She previously served on the faculties of Penn State University, Wayne State College, the University of Northern Iowa, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Simpson College. Her research interests in both historical and contemporary organ pedagogy have generated a variety of presentations ranging from lecture-recitals to a video-based program, “Conversations and Legacies: Exploring Late 20th-century American Organ Pedagogy Through Oral History,” featuring interviews with nearly two dozen American university-level organ teachers active in the period 1970-2005. The DVD of her 2010 national AGO convention presentation, “How We Got Here from There: Trends in Pedagogy, 1860-1960” was released in the fall of 2011. She has also enjoyed offering presentations on 19th-century American church music, organ teacher John Zundel, and the theology of Henry Ward Beecher, as well as classes on the organ through the University of Kansas’s OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute.

Ann Marie attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa prior to earning the B.Mus. degree in Organ Performance from Southern Methodist University, where she received the Dora Poteet Barclay award in organ as a student of Robert T. Anderson. She received the M.S. in Library and Information Science and the M.M. in Musicology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she was a University Fellow and held teaching assistantships in organ and musicology while studying with Jerald Hamilton. As a Rahn Scholar at the University of Iowa, where she earned the D.M.A. in Organ Performance and Pedagogy, she studied with Delores Bruch Cannon and Delbert Disselhorst. Her dissertation research on organist John Zundel was supported by grants from the Organ Historical Society American Organ Archive and the Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies. Faculty research awards from Wayne State College allowed her to pursue post-graduate harpsichord study with Larry Palmer at Southern Methodist University. More recently, her oral history research has been supported by a Special Projects Grant from the San Francisco chapter of the AGO. In addition to her performances and presentations, she has written articles and reviews for The American Organist, The Diapason, The Journal of Singing, and Music Library Association NOTES.

A strong advocate for young organists, Ann Marie served the American Guild of Organists on the national committee for the AGO/Quimby Regional Competitions for Young Organists from 2005 to 2011. She has taught at eight Pipe Organ Encounters for high school students and served as Faculty Coordinator for the POE held in Kansas City in June 2009. In preparation for the 2018 AGO national convention in Kansas City, she served on the New Music Committee and on the Steering Committee as liaison for the 2018 National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance.
