Jack D. Miller is organist at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Sacramento where he acted as consultant for a new 48 rank pipe organ of 19th century style (Cavaille-Coll) built by John Hupalo of San Leandro. Mr. Miller has served in various capacities as an officer and board member of the Sacramento Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He directs Chanteuses, a chamber vocal ensemble of women’s voices.

He previously served as Music Director and Organist at Pioneer Congregational Church, Sacramento from 1993 to 1998, where he was responsible for the installation of a landmark combination pipe/digital organ of 76 stops. During his tenure at Pioneer he showcased the new organ with several organ recitals, one in which he collaborated with the Deane Dance Studio in presenting classical organ pieces with dance. His Festival Chorus at Pioneer continued a long tradition of fine choral music at the historical church. Several benefit concerts were given performing Brahm’s German Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Durufle’s Requiem with full orchestra and staged the liturgical music drama, The Pilgrim by Richard Proulx.

For a decade he served as Director of Music and Arts at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverside where he developed a diverse choral program and an active concert series. He recorded Ralph Vaughan Williams’ First Nowell for Musical Heritage Society with his Pro Musica Chorus and Orchestra and presented many international organists and ensembles featuring the renovated Moller/Casavant organ. He also served at Christ Lutheran in La Mesa and St. Bartholomew’s Episicopal Church in Poway.

He has played recitals on many major instruments and has performed twice for Regional Conventions of the American Guild of Organists. He has performed the Symphonie Concertante by Joseph Jongen and Toccata Festiva by Samuel Barber with the Camellia Orchestra and the Suite in G for Organ and Orchestra by Respighi with Eugene Castillo conducting a professional chamber orchestra.

He earned his Master of Music Degree at the University of Southern California where he studied organ with Irene Robertson and Ladd Thomas. Earlier studies were with Walter Eichinger (U. of Washington), Jean Christian (St Paul), Edward Berryman (Minneapolis).

He has participated in master classes with Sir David Willcocks, Marie Claire Alain, Gerre Hancock, Robert Anderson, David Hurd, and Arthur Poister. He started his organ studies at the age of 14 with Carl Hellander in Seattle.
